The main characteristic of a sociopath is a disregard for the rights of others. Sociopaths are also unable to conform to what society defines as a normal personality. Antisocial tendencies are a big part of the sociopath's personality. This pattern usually comes into evidence around the age of 15. If it is not treated, it can develop into adulthood.

Lack of empathy. Your partner may have difficulty putting him or herself in the shoes of others, and behave insensitively as a result. Sometimes your partner may attempt to mimic the emotions behind empathy, but over time it will ring hollow.

Psychopaths think nothing of lying, cheating and stealing. We are aware of the extreme cases, psychopaths who commits serious crimes such as; serial rapists and serial killers. However, we are less educated about psychopaths in the political arena, businessmen who commit whitecollar crimes, or the psychopath who defraud trusting men and women of their life-saving. If you believe you can spot a psychopath, please think again. Psychopaths often assimilate easily into society.

Lack of true remorse or guilt for harmful behaviors. Your partner may get upset when caught - but it is not true conscience or remorse, but the inconvenience of having to smooth things over with you to keep you around. This may be accompanied with a superficial charm and shallow emotional affect all around.

Pathological lying by your partner. He or she may lie about just about everything. Much of it may be in order to further an agenda, or manipulate or con you and others out of things that he or she wants.

One of my favorite expressions in life is, "The whole worlds crazy except for you and me but sometimes I don't know about you." It's funny because it's very true, we see ourselves as the picture of sanity and judge the rest of world accordingly. Our personality traits, our foibles our actions and prejudices are the benchmarks by which we judge our own sanity. We laud that in our humanity it is our differences that make the world go round but the benchmarks themselves are open to interpretation. We would not accept from anyone that a body temperature of 103 is just being different or a free spirit.

Statistics tell us that approximately 1 out of 20 people we interact with have, on some level that is destructive, sociopath tendencies. I'm sure you've heard that serial killers are sociopaths, and that is true to the extreme. Naturally, there are different levels of dysfunction, just as there are different levels of, say, depression.
